Diet Tip: Portion Control
I am continuously amazed at how much portion sizes have increased over time. What used to be considered a small drink - 8 ounces - now comes in a 16-ounce cup at most restaurants. That’s not only twice the size, but twice as many calories and grams of sugar than what it used to be if you order a regular soda. These ever-growing portions not only apply to drinks but to meals and desserts as well. It’s no wonder why so many Americans are overweight!
It becomes necessary to judge portions for yourself to control your caloric intake.
Portion Control
- Order a tall latte instead of the venti. If you need more caffeine, order a double tall, or an extra shot of espresso.
- A large pizza suits a group of 4 or 5. Two slices of pie-cut pizza is enough for a single person.
- Limit yourself to one dinner roll per meal.
- If you’re having a bagel, split it with a friend. Commercial bagels are two, sometimes three times the size they used to be.
- If your weakness if fast food, order a kiddie meal instead of a regular meal. You could easily cut calories in half this way.
- Use a small bowl for cereal, the smallest you can find.
- Carbs like white rice or mashed potatoes should take up less than a quarter of your plate. Aim to eat only 1/2 cup of starchy carbs per meal
In My Bag: Lancome Dual Finish Foundation
I’m always going back and forth with foundation consistencies - from powder to stick to mousse to liquid, depending on the season and the level of maintenance mood I’m in. Pressed powders, although the most portable/convenient, tend to wear away quicker than other formulas. Lancome Dual Finish pressed powder foundation does not. It goes on silky, with medium to full coverage, for a flawless complexion throughout the day. You can use it dry or damp depending on the amount of coverage you need. Many news anchor-ettes use this compact for touch-ups in between takes; it’s that good. Shine stays at bay but there is no chalkiness with this stuff whatsoever. I will totally be using wearing this to the office all summer long!
4 Things To Add To Your Beauty Regimen
Exfoliate. Gently slough away dead skin on your face (including your lips) and body using a warm washcloth. For advanced exfoliation 2-3 times a week I’ll use Lancome Microdermabrasion Kit for face and a fragrant oil-based body scrub in the bath. St. Ive’s makes two fabulously cost-effective face scrubs for the masses including one for blackhead control as well as the cult favorite Apricot Scrub, although I’d use the stuff sparingly as it tends to be more abrasive. Post-scrub, smooth on baby oil or your favorite body cream, moisturizer for face, and a rich lip balm to baby your skin.
E-lemon-ate the need to bleach. The highlighting powers in lemon juice isn’t only useful for hair. Use halfed lemons on your elbows and knees for gentle brightening on those parts. Chew lemon wedges to gradually lighten your teeth.
Apply and reapply hand cream. Keep hand cream at your disposal at all times. As we’re washing our hands thoughout the day - and often using drying public bathroom soaps - premature wrinkling will take place if we’re not protecting our mitts from dryness and cracking.
Drink two liters of water each day. That’s roughly eight glasses. Try it and I guarantee that after just a week your hair, skin, and waistline will be thanking you.
Get your beauty sleep on a memory foam mattress.

Reasons Why You’re Not Losing Weight
You’re working out more, eating better. So why does it seem like you’re not losing weight as fast as you’d like?
You’re rewarding yourself post-workout with high-calorie foods. Great workout! How are we congratulating ourselves? If it’s with fast food, ice cream, or chicken wings, we’re not doing ourselves any favor. Choose a piece of fruit, Slim Fast, or a diet bar instead.
You’re eating healthy, but not counting calories. If you’re trying to lose weight, it’s a good idea to have an idea of how many calories you should be eating a day according to your lifestyle level. Sure, healthy food is good food, but if you’re still eating more calories than you’re burning, you won’t lose any weight. Use this simple calculator to figure out how many calories you need a day to maintain your weight; subtract about 300 calories from that number to lose around a pound a week. Exercise to lose more.
You shop when you’re hungry. It’s an age-old truth. When you shop on an empty stomach, you tend to buy more junk food. Have a healthy meal or snack before heading to the supermarket.
You’re lazy. Instead of driving a short distance, take a brisk walk. Take the stairs up and down a few floors instead of using the elevator. Those extra calories burned really add up!
Your friends are lazy. If your friends are prone to binging, you’re more likely to give in to their fast food expeditions. Find a think-thin buddy to remain inspired to get fit.
How To Keep Your Integrity
What is integrity? It’s a characteristic that everyone wants, but not everyone can maintain due to a lack of self-control to some degree. The following tips address that issue and will ensure that you remain the best girl (or guy) standing in any situation
Choose your battles. So much energy is wasted when we’re quick to jump in every case where we feel wronged. Save your energy for matters that are most important; let everything else go.
Complain less. It is proven that our attitude alone towards things heavily influence how we feel. You can’t expect to get over anything when you remain in a pessimistic mood. Think positive, feel positive.
Don’t gossip about friends with friends. Resolve issues with a friend before going to the next friend about them. Anything you say about someone in anger can end up coming back to you - or them - just when you’re trying to smooth things over.
Be slow to anger. Keep your cool. Don’t lose your composure. It’s usually not worth it.
Spring/Summer Style: Going Nautical

Casual fashionista Lauren Conrad goes basically nautical in a cute, short white dress with navy blue detail to give an out-at-sea feel. The look is so typically spring, so I figured I’d start out with the basics. Get the look by pairing solid navy on solid white in whichever way you choose to flatter your shape. I would probably go for a satin navy halter top with pants like these white J Brand “Lovestory” bell-bottom jeans (bell-bottoms are back in a big way this season so we’ll be seeing those everywhere). The nautical look can also be acheived by pairing a white/navy striped accessory (perhaps a tote) with basic colors like grey, black, and/or red (patent red peeptoe flats or pumps would be perfectly bold paired with a nautical navy top or very dark-washed blue jeans).
