Fight Breast Cancer By Flashing a Pretty Pink Smile

We normally associate white teeth with good dental health, but dentists around the country are hoping to add a little pink to your smile!  Smile Pink is a campaign designed to increase awareness of breast cancer and allow people to “Smile For The Cause.” For a donation of $25, a participating Smile Pink dentist will bond a small pink Swarovski crystal to one of your teeth during October, which has been designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Smile Pink is the brainchild of Dr. Dr. Anthony Vocaturo, a dentist in Bayonne, NJ recently lost his sister to this disease.  To help raise awareness about this devastating illness, Dr. Voctaturo teamed up with other dental professionals who are just as passionate about defeating breast cancer as they are about providing good dental care.

All proceeds from Smile Pink go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Currently about 50 dentists nationwide are participating in the Smile Pink project, and so far, reaction to the campaign has been enthusiastic.  The procedure takes just a few moments of time, a little dental assisting, and uses a temporary adhesive that won’t harm the teeth. Participating dentists will also release the gem at no cost whenever the patient is ready to have it removed.

Medical experts estimate that one of every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lifetimes. Breast cancer can be treated successfully if it is detected early. Undetected or untreated, breast cancer can spread to other parts of the body, which significantly decreases a woman’s long-term chances of surviving the disease.

The Smile Pink campaign gives people a fun way to help defeat breast cancer and support breast cancer research. Smile Pink offers a very visible way to start conversations about breast cancer and breast cancer research.

In addition to adding a little bling to patients’ teeth, the dentists who have joined the program will also be offering educational materials to patients to help them learn about breast cancer, symptoms of the disease and where to go for help if they need it.

The crystal jewels used for the Smile Pink campaign are small and have a special coating to make them sparkle.  The jewels are attached to the tooth with a special bonding agent that is used in orthodontic work.  Although the bonding agent is temporary, the jewels will stay in place until they’re removed at the dentist’s office. The dentist or dental hygienist can also polish the surface of the tooth to remove any remaining bonding material once the jewel has been removed.

Patients can leave the jewel in place for as long as they like, and it will not interfere with regular brushing, eating or dental cleanings. The jewels are small – less than 1 mm thick and less than 3 mm in diameter (smaller jewels are also available) with a smooth surface, so they should feel both comfortable and natural in the wearer’s mouth.

Too Much TV

Being home alone a lot means I get really bored. There are only so many books you can read and though I love to paint it’s hard to do it day in and day out. I found some good Direct TV deals online a few months back and got some extra channels and that’s helped to alleviate the boredom but I’ve become one of those people who has to have the TV on all day which is something I’m definitely not used to. I watch a lot of news channels but I’ve also recently really gotten into A&Ebecause it’s reality stuff but it’s got a definite news angle. The shows like The First 48 and all the Hoarders and Intervention type docu-drama shows just fascinate me – I don’t know why in the world I didn’t become a psychologist, that’s what everyone told me I should do! Anyway, I love being at home with the kids but it’s nice to have a distractions. At least this way I can dream!
