What Is This About Vibrating Mascara?

June 20, 2008 / Filed under Trend Watch. 5 Comments

Vibrating Mascara?Apparently, leading makeup line Estee Lauder has been the first to introduce the revolutionary “new” technology of… vibrating mascara. I say “new” in quotes because vibrators are not new, and mascara is nothing new, but vibrating mascara?

Estee Lauder TurboLash All Effects Motion Mascara boasts lash “length, curl, and separation” from its battery-operated, motion-happy bristle brush that vibrates at 125 micropulses a second. Interesting. Can’t knock it because I haven’t tried it yet but it is certainly an interesting marketing angle!

Look out for Lancôme’s polymer brush version of vibrating mascara in the fall, called Ôscillation. Read more about Lauder’s and Lancome’s new vibrating mascara on Sparkle*Shelf and WWD.

MAC Neon Makeup Collection 2008

June 16, 2008 / Filed under Trend Watch. 4 Comments

Bright neon makeup and accessories are in this season, proving that you can be daring beyond just flashy nail polish this summer. MAC is really setting this trend, being among the first of mainstream makeup lines to debut neon- and bright-colored eyeshadows, blush, nail polish, and even their new Softsac clutches. The Softsacs come in small, medium, and large sizes, making them fitting for uses including: a fashionable coin purse, an on-the-go summer makeup bag, or a fun colored clutch to tote your beach or nightlife essentials.

Below are some of my fave picks from MAC’s summer neon-colored makeup and accessories:

MAC Neon Makeup Summer Collection

1. MAC Softsacs

These bright, shiny neon sacks would be a perfect accessory to add to any girl’s summer wardrobe. My favorite neons are yellow, orange, and blue so it is tempting to buy one in every size.

2. MAC Naughty Nauticals Eyeshadow in Submarine

I love using funky blue eyeshadows in my smoky eye looks, so I can’t wait to get my hands on Submarine Naughty Nauticals eyeshadow. I’d pair it with one of my fave Lancôme shadows – Statuesque for a matte black smoke or The New Black for glittery black smoke – and paint the town neon blue!

3. MAC Nail Laquer in Phosphor

MAC calls Phosphor nail laquer a “bumble bee” yellow, but I say that this is the “canary yellow” nail polish I’ve been looking for all season. Following in Moi’s fabulous footsteps, I am dying to see what neon yellow looks like painted against my dark skin this summer. I presume Phophor neon yellow nail laquer would look great against nearly all skin tones – if even for shock value.

4. MAC Slimshine Lipstick in Tropic Glow

If these Slimshine lipsticks are anything like my new favorite Revlon sheer lipstick, they’re probably better. This sheer, bright pink lipstick I would love to try and pull off but if the color is too bright, you could easily pair it with a sheer, wet lip gloss to subdue the color a bit.

5. MAC Dazzleglass in Funtabulous

This Dazzleglass is bright, purple, and shimmery, which are the only three reasons I need to add it to my overflowing lip gloss collection!

Now that you’re feeling daring with neons you can check out this summer’s neon clothes trend as well!

Celebrity Sunglasses - Which Are Right For You?

June 14, 2008 / Filed under Trend Watch. 10 Comments

Celebrities wearing sunglasses gives us an idea of which will work best with our own face shape. I say this because celebrities have go-to personal stylists that keep them in-the-know of which styles are in and which will work best for them! :) Take a cue from celebrities such as Eva Mendes, Nicole Richie, and Victoria Beckham on which sunglasses shapes will work best for you.

Nicole Richie Sunglasses Victoria Beckham Sunglasses Eva Mendes Sunglasses

Sunglasses for Round Face Shapes

If you have a round-shaped face, choose square or rectangular frames to even out your look as Eva Mendes models above. Square sunglasses also look great on oval and oblong face shapes.

Sunglasses for Square Shaped Faces

If your face shape is on the square side – especially if you have a square chin – choose either round-shaped frames or sunglasses with rounded bottoms like the ones Nicole Richie is wearing above. Round-shaped sunglasses will soften the shape of square faces.

Sunglasses for Heart-Shaped Faces

If your face is heart-shaped like Victoria Beckham, Reese Witherspoon, or Jennifer Aniston, aviator shades will work great for you among many other styles. Only stay away from wide sunglasses which will draw too much attention to a wider forehead.

Keep the following things in mind also when choosing sunglasses to suit your face shape:

  • The edge of your frames should be a bit wider than the widest part of your face.
  • Warm skin tones look best in gold, tan, or pink frames.
  • Cool skin tones look great in white, black, and silver frames.

Spring/Summer Style: Going Nautical

Casual fashionista Lauren Conrad goes basically nautical in a cute, short white dress with navy blue detail to give an out-at-sea feel. The look is so typically spring, so I figured I’d start out with the basics. Get the look by pairing solid navy on solid white in whichever way you choose to flatter your shape. I would probably go for a satin navy halter top with pants like these white J Brand “Lovestory” bell-bottom jeans (bell-bottoms are back in a big way this season so we’ll be seeing those everywhere). The nautical look can also be acheived by pairing a white/navy striped accessory (perhaps a tote) with basic colors like grey, black, and/or red (patent red peeptoe flats or pumps would be perfectly bold paired with a nautical navy top or very dark-washed blue jeans).
