How To Apply Makeup Part I: Foundation & Concealer
What is foundation? Foundation is makeup that you use to even out your skintone and prepare your face for the rest of your makeup. Foundation gives the appearance of an overall more “even” make-up look. Concealer is what you apply before or after foundation to spot-cover any imperfections such as dark circles, sun spots, and other hyperpigmentation.
Foundation comes in three main forms: cream, liquid, and powder. Dry skin benefits most from the moisture in liquid foundation. Oily skin will appreciate the more matte look that powder foundation provides. Concealer usually comes in a tube or in a pot and also has various consistencies.
How To Apply Concealer
Use a concealer wand (comes with some concealers), a concealer brush, a cotton swab, or your ring finger to apply concealer. Choose a shade one or two shades lighter than your skintone. I find it is better to apply concealer before foundation so that everything looks blended. Dab concealer over any dark or red areas on the face and blend the outer edges well before applying foundation.
How To Apply Foundation
Foundation is easiest applied with a foundation brush, a makeup sponge, or your fingers. When choosing foundation tools, I have found that it is something worth investing in. Quality tools provide quality foundation application.
If you want full coverage, use a foundation brush and apply in brisk upward strokes around main areas of the face. This is said to prevent wrinkles in the long run. If you want your makeup to look dewy, apply your foundation with a damp makeup sponge. Squeeze out excess water then apply your foundation. This gives a fresh look to the face and prevents the sponge from absorbing excess product. Use your fingers if you have none of these tools available–your ring finger is the most gentle.
