How To Look Good In Photos

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008 | Beauty Tips

Do you ever wonder why some people seem to be more photogenic than others, regardless of what they look like in real life? It’s all about angles, and you have to work them.

Below are some tricks you can use to look thinner and slimmer in pictures.

How To Look Slimmer In Photos Lindsay Lohan

  • Turn slightly to your side
  • Place one leg in front of the other
  • Unless you have lean arms, do not place your hand(s) on your hip. Leave them down at your sides or behind your back.
  • Tuck (not suck) in your tummy
  • Pull your shoulders back

For closeups, to feign a slimmer/smaller nose: turn your face to the side and cock your head back slightly away from the camera.

Have you ever done your or someone else’s makeup and taken a picture, only to find that it doesn’t look as good digitally as it did in real life? When planning to take lots of pictures on a girls night out and you want your makeup to look digitally true, it takes a heavier (yet precise) hand to make those colors, highlights, and contours really pop.

How To Apply Makeup For Pictures

  • Use Twice As Much. Unless you have flawless skin, you will need to use a bit more base (foundation or concealer) than normal to mask imperfections. Apply two layers of concealer under the eyes, and places where you may not normally such as the inner corners of your eyes, the sides of your nose, under your brows, and around your lips. When applying eyeshadows, blush, and contours, use twice as many layers. For precision contouring, I like to take a dark brown eyeliner khol and draw lines on the creases of my eyes and hollows of my cheeks, blend well, then apply the contouring shade on top. This ensures that these deliberate contours will really stand out in photos.
  • Prepare Your Canvas. When planning to be in photos, prepare your face for makeup as well as the camera lens. If you have dry skin, do not skip applying a hydrating moisturizer before makeup. If your skin is oily and prone to shine, exfoliate with a warm washcloth before applying a light moisturizer.
  • Choose Correct Shades. Your concealer and foundation should perfectly match the undertone of your skin, whether that be red, yellow, or neutral. I have neutral undertones, so when I chose a base that is either too red or too yellow, it definitely shows under the camera flash. You can go to a makeup counter where they can color-match your skin for free. Also, your concealer should be one shade lighter than your skintone to mask dark circles.
  • Accentuate Your Best Feature. Be sure to really play up the eyes or lips (but not both). If you have big, beautiful eyes, accentuate them by applying generous amounts of mascara and contouring the crease with a dark eyeshadow. If you have luscious lips, layer gloss on top of lipstick for lush, long-lasting color. If you’re doing dramatic eyes, choose a neutral lip shade such as nude or mauve. If you’re going for bold lips, don’t go overboard on the eyes.
  • Shape Your Face. The way you sculpt (or forget to sculpt) your face could make or break your photo op. In general, you’ll want eyes that pop, slimmer cheekbones, and soft-looking lips. Therefore, don’t forget to contour the crease of your eyes and the hollows of your cheekbones with a shade darker than the eyeshadow or blush you are wearing. To make your lips appear fuller, layer on a light-colored lip gloss. To make your lips look smaller, apply a lip liner that is darker than your lipstick or lip gloss.

Now, you would look stellar in say, photos of you and your boo when you take a golf trip to Branson resorts.

“Tuck (not suck) in your tummy” - word. Most girls do not understand this.

It’s sort of pathetic that we all try to look the same in photos. For instance, slimmer cheekbones.

Great timing with this - I’m probably taking some photos with a friend tomorrow.
